This course covers some of the major historical shifts in the American burlesque tradition including Thompsonian burlesque (and those who followed), female minstrel shows, hootchy cootchie dance, wheels, emergence of striptease, queens of burlesque, exotic dancing, the neo-burlesque movement and boylesque. The students’ knowledge is evaluated using non-traditional methods, such as creative book and performance reviews, and a final voluntary performance in lieu of a final paper.

Full course description can be found here.

I taught this class in Summer 2016 and Summer 2017.
